Frequently Asked Driver's License Questions

I just moved from another state.  What do I need to apply for an Idaho Driver's License?

If you are moving to Idaho and currently have been issued a Driver's License or ID card from another State, you will be required to bring it in. You will also need your proof of residency, which is a lease agreement or electricity/propane bill with your name and the physical address on it, provide your social security number and pass the class D general knowledge driver's license test.

Persons moving from the following states will be required to provide an non-expired U.S. Passport, Certified Birth Certificate issued by a state in the U.S.A. or Lawful Presence Documentation: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Washington, District of Columbia.

I have an out of state license but is lost.  Can I still get an Idaho driver's license?

If you have a out of state license issued to you but have currently lost it, please come in for a photo request. We cannot issue an Idaho license without the actual card or a photo request ordered.

My son is taking Driver's Ed and needs to get his Learner's Permit.  What documentation do we need?

If your child is 16 years or under, documentation requirements are set by the Idaho Transportation Department and are subject to change to meet Idaho Code requirements:

  • Certified copy of birth certificate. If foreign born we require documents showing legal status, i.e. Permanent resident card, employment authorization card, passport with visa, as well as a school transcript with the student demographics (page listing parents names).
  • Social security card. If a social security number has never been issued, then we require a letter of "Non-Issuance" from the Social Security Administration.
  • Verification of Compliance (a letter issued from the school administration proving the student is enrolled in an educational program). This letter is required from either the school or GED program.
  • Parent or Legal Guardian present to sign liability for the child, the name of the parent must be listed on the birth certificate, and they must have a current ID Driver's License or ID Card. If the person present is not listed on the birth certificate, we require the legal documentation; i.e. guardianship papers, adoption papers, etc., that proves the adult has the right to sign liability.
  • Qualifying photo: student activity card, yearbook, state ID, passport ID (issued by the Department of Homeland Security), photo transcript (provided by the school with the seal and or embossment.
